The Houston Mount Everest Expedition
1933 (5 Apr.) a rare and desirable envelope and letter from R.A. Bennett, the expedition's medical officer on the stationery of Raj Darbhanga to Col. Worthington in Simla. The envelope bearing India K.G.V 1a.3p. tied by a fine strike of the special circular Purnea c.d.s. in purple, the reverse with a good strike of the type X three-line postmark and Simla arrival (7.4); the cover with a small corner fault, otherwise good to fine. The six page letter, dated 5th April, gives some interesting details about the camp and the flights including how he was taken up to 12.000 feet, his first flight in an aeroplane, how Bonell's oxygen supply failed on the flight on the 3rd but he was able to continue taking photographs, and the biggest obstacle to flying was the wind which reached speeds of 100 mph, above the maximum of 50 mph for safety. The pages of the letter are splitting. Although it appears that this letter was not flown it is still an important item from this expedition. Photo
