Early Letters and Handstamps
1790 (3 July) entire letter headed "St. George's Key" from Captain George Faith to a London timber merchant, sent on the ship "Marchant" and rated "9", carried to Dover with fine "dover/ship lre" handstamp (S3) applied on face and with London arrival datestamp (1.9) on reverse; interesting contents include "Here is a report come from Jamaica informing us of a war with Spane [sic], which has alarmed the merchants so that the send for most part of the negro[es] from the works [here] . Note: Written from St. George's Caye which was desirable residential area, away from the swampy and unhealthy area, where the sea breezes kept the cayes cooler and where there were fewer mosquitoes
