Early Letters and Handstamps
1789 (10 Nov.) entire letter from Captain George Faith to a London timber merchant, sent on the ship "Grange" and rated "1/7", carried to Liverpool with fine "liverpool/ship" handstamp (S1) applied on face and with London arrival datestamp (18.2) on reverse, a transit time of 100 days. Photo

Note: The 1788 Treaty of London allowed British subjects to occupy the territory for logging and subsistence farming. Commercial crops were prohibited. The land remained under Spanish sovereignty. Captain Faith was in charge of a group of reformed pirates, who were employed to cut logwood. This yielded blue dye which was used in the textile industry
