Volunteer Force Long Service Medal (India & the Colonies), G.V.R. (Pte. W. J. Craig Cawnpore A.F.I.), impressed naming, nearly extremely fine

William Jeffers Craig was born on 24 November 1871 at Dundonald, Ayrshire and enlisted in the Royal Engineers (No. 25437) at London in December 1890, with previous service in the Essex Artillery Volunteers. Craig served at home for just 53 days and was thence discharged, the reason unknown. He next appears in India in 1899, by this time an Engineer being initiated to the Masonic Lodge of Harmony at Cawnpore. Working for Muir Mills and the Cawnpore Cotton Mills, Craig was commissioned into the Indian Army Reserve of Officers during the Great War and served with Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers. He was appointed Deputy Controller (Munitions) United Provinces, with his British War and Victory Medal Pair issued to 10 Civil Lines, Cawnpore. Awarded this Medal in October 1926 (Army Order 752, refers), he returned home to Welwyn and died at Hatfield in 1949; sold with copied MIC and other research.
