Eric George Anderson Clifford was born on 3 September 1900 at Hove, Sussex and was educated at the Training Ship Worcester serving during the Great War as a Midshipman. A navigation specialist, he was appointed Fleet Navigating Officer, China Station from 1938-40 and served during the Second World War commanding the destroyers Mackay and Salisbury. He was then latterly as Naval Assistant Secretary to the War Cabinet from 1941-43. Towards the end of the war he was seagoing again, this time in command of Diadem, which gained fame for her role in the Arctic Convoys, destroying three U-Boats and shooting down several enemy aircraft. She then played a fine role in supporting the Normandy Landings, earning a brace of 'mentions' for Clifford. Appointed Commander-in-Chief at Hong Kong in 1945, Clifford went to the Imperial Defence College in 1946 and commanded Illustrious from 1949, being promoted Rear-Admiral in 1951 and was Flag Officer Commanding Fifith Cruiser Squadron, as such responsible for all naval operations in Korean waters from 1952. Made Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff in 1954, he retired in 1957 and died at Hailsham on 7 September 1964, four days after his 64th birthday; sold together with Bestowal Document for the K.C.B., besides transmittal letters for both K.C.B. and C.B.E., besides related miniature riband bar and copied research.
