David Millard was born at Dunmore, Portland, Victoria in 1881 and enlisted in the Army Veterinary Corps, Australian Imperial Force on 13 October 1914. Embarked at Melbourne aboard the Borda on 22 December 1914, he served with the 2nd Veterinary Section (1915 Star). Suffering from jaundice he was admitted to No. 2 General Hospital in November 1915, being discharged on 9 December 1915. Returned to active service with the 4th Mobile Section and was promoted Lance-Corporal on 8 December 1916. Detached from the 4th Mobile Section to the 22nd Veterinary Hospital at Abbeville, Millard taught cold shoeing from 28 February 1917. In March however he began to suffer with a cough which was worsened by his continued service at the front. Admitted to 14th General Hospital, he was then evacuated and admitted to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford on 11 February 1918. Discharged back to Australia for further treatment, he eventually died on account of chronic bronchitis on 8 October 1918 at Hamilton, Victoria. His father claimed his Medals in December 1923; sold with copied Service Record.
