John E. Essery was born in 1886 and served in France with the 10th Battalion from 9 May 1915. He was killed in action on 23 July 1916, when the unit attacked from north of Bazentin Wood between their 1st and 8th Battalions. He left a widow who lived at 66 Kingsholm Road, Gloucester and is buried in the Serre Road Cemetery No. 2.
