Four: Petty Officer C. J. Richards, Royal Navy, who served on Q-ships during the Great War

Cecil John Richards was born on 1 February 1895 at Hastings, Sussex and entered the Royal Navy whilst working as a page boy in 1913. During the Great War he served aboard the Q-Ship Q19, later renamed Privet on two occasions, from 2 December 1916-17 May 1917 and June-August 1917. On 12 March 1917 she was attacked by U-85 in the English Channel. When the U-boat surfaced they saw the crew of the Privet appearing to be about to abandon ship. In fact they were uncovering their machine guns. The Privet opened fire at very close range on the submarine and sank it. She also sunk the U-29 the same year

Richards was invalided with an absess on the right lung in August 1932; sold together with related miniature dress Great War Trio.
