A 1948 O.B.E. group of seven awarded to Colonel and Chief Paymaster J. C. L. Thomas, Royal Army Pay Corps, who received a 'mention' for North West Europe during the Second World War and who was made Chief Paymaster in 1956

John Christopher Lloyd Thomas was commissioned as a 'University Candidate' into the Territorial Army to be a 2nd Lieutenant (No.44227) in the General List on 18 August 1929, and then transferred to the Regular Army as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Prince of Wales's Volunteers on 19 February 1930, with seniority from 5 December 1925. By the outbreak of the Second World War he was a Captain and Paymaster with the Royal Army Pay Corps, and was promoted to war substantive Major and Staff Paymaster Class 2 on 5 December 1942. Present during the operations in North West Europe, Thomas was a temporary Lieutenant Colonel and Staff Paymaster Class 1 when he was 'mentioned' (London Gazette 8 November 1945, refers).

Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and Staff Paymaster Class 1 on 1 February 1951, he was made Colonel and Chief Paymaster on 12 April 1956 and retired 'on account of disability' on 5 June 1965; sold with copied research.
