A Union Flag: 'The last British flag to fly over the Summer Palace Pekin', 1901.

Wool bunting, originally measuring 36 inches (915mm) square, now reduced at the hoist to 788 mm and at the fly by wear; white canvas hoist sleeve retaining its halyard, with wooden toggle at the top and loop at the bottom; stamped in black ink on the obverse side of the sleeve with the Broad Arrow and W D and the measurements 3' x 3'. Attached to the flag with a steel pin, a piece of paper bearing, in Dobell's hand, the ink inscription: The last British flag to fly over the Summer Palace Pekin, hauled down by me when the Summer Palace was handed back to the Chinese in 1901. Chinese as well as British troops (det. R.W. Fus) presented arms. See account in Times circa Feb 1902. Charles Dobell 28.XI.20.
