Loans of the Clergy of Kent to Charles II
1666-67 a selection of three documents relating to loans given by the Clergy of Kent to Charles II under his Act 17 passed to raise funds for war with the Dutch. 1666 (24 April) a document created by William Somner, written on both sides of a large piece of paper, detailing loans granted by the members of the Clergy of Kent "upon the security of the Act of Parliament made at Oxford". Each entry subscribed with their relevant signature including "James Benchkin Curate of Ash" and "Peter Du Moulin". On the reverse of the sheet, William Somner has written up each entry and subscribed them with his signature or initials. 1667 (16 July) series of entries in one hand of loans made by members of the "Clergy towards the present supply of his Majesty", each signed by their lender. 1667 (July 16) two lists in the hand of William Somner headed "Subscriptions to the Royal Aid by the Clergy Cant. D Diocese.". Most subscriptions listed are between £5 and £20.
