1687 (22 October), letter from Henry Guy, Secretary to the Treasury, to Sir Robert Howard, Auditor of the Exchequer, from the Treasury Chambers. "The Lords Commissioners of his Majesties Treasury desire that the Summe of Three Hundred Pounds which was paid into the Exchequer by Mr. Graham, and others out of the proffitts of the Lord Greys Estate may be issued to the Earle of Rochester in further part of the Summe of £16000 granted to his Lordship out of that Estate". Signed "Hen: Guy", with address panel and filing endorsement on reverse. Fine. Photo

John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1647-1680) was an English poet and courtier to Charles II, known for his controversial poetry. Already the recipient of a generous £500 annual pension, in 1687 Rochester took on the proceeds of the Lord Grey Estate in Northumberland including Chillingham Castle.
