Sir Henry Firebrace
1685 (1 August) order on part printed page to repay a loan of £1000 "arising by an imposition on French Linen, Brandy, and other Commodities ... unto Sir Henry Firebrace Knight" which had been lent to the crown by Firebrace. Signed "Rochester" with receipt signed "H Firebrace" on reverse. Page in half, presumably for filing purposes and the front bears marks of mounting which impedes slightly on Rochester's signature. Sir Henry Firebrace (1619-1691), was a loyal courtier to Charles I. He was believed to have been employed under the Parliamentarians to guard Charles I when in fact he had been working covertly for the Royalist cause, ensuring the delivery of Charles' mail and aiding in his escape. Under Charles II, Firebrace served as Clerk of the Green Cloth and received his knighthood.
