1685 (9 January) order from Henry Guy, Secretary to the Treasury, to Sir Robert Howard, Auditor of the Receipt, to pay sums of £2500 for the Keeper of the Privy Purse "to complete a quarter", £500 ditto "for healing gold", £200 ditto "for Sir Thomas Sands", £200 ditto "for Mr. Foliard" out of a loan of £50,000 from Alderman Charles Duncombe. Healing gold, or gold touch-pieces, were used during popular ceremonies held in the Banqueting House of the Palace of Whitehall during Charles II's reign to cure Scrofula, or the "King's Evil".
