Sir Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby
1675 (30 December) warrant written on single page from Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby, as Lord Treasurer to John Phillips, Auditor of the King's Revenue for Middlesex, stating the "fee farm rent" payable by Henry Jermyn, Earl of St. Albans, for "diverse slips of ground in St. James feilds" was unpaid for nine and a half years at last Michelmas, totalling £760. Osborne then refers to "his Majesty by his Lettors of Privy Seale ... 22th day of October last past being gratiously pleased to accept of three hundred pounds in full discharge of all the said arrears". Upon receiving the said sum, the Auditor is ordered to consider the debt of £760 paid. Signed "Danby" with filing subscription to bottom of page and reverse. An interesting document illustrating the King's lenience in the collection of taxes through farm fees.

Henry Jermyn (1605 (baptised) - 1684), English politician, Earl of Saint Albans and Baron Jermyn (1625 - 1643), was Charles I's Vice Chamberlain from 1628 and Master of the Horse from 1639. Jermyn was active in garnering support for the Crown from abroad, acting for a short while as Henrietta Maria of France's secretary. Henry Jermyn is also acknowledged as the 'Father of the West End', owing to areas of St James's Square and surrounding streets being granted to him. The sites were later cleared to build Regent Street and Waterloo Place.
