1874 (Jan.) Ashanti Wars stampless envelope to Edinburgh with "Stamps not procurable", manuscript rate "4" in blue crayon corrected to "6" in ink and bearing Cape Coast Castle transit c.d.s. (8.1), the reverse with Edinburgh arrival (1.2); a little roughly opened at foot. A very early letter from this campaign (the troops only began their march on 1st January) and later mails were marked in Liverpool with the handstruck 6d. rate mark. Photo

The 4d. was the special rate during the campaign for mail to be sent via the Cape Verde Islands, this was cancelled and replaced by the 6d. on arrival in Liverpool. All surviving examples of the 4d. rate bear a Cape Coast Castle c.d.s. of January or early February 1874
