Gold Coast
1840 (6 Nov.) entire missionary letter from Cape Coast Castle to London, rated "8" and with a good strike of "bristol/ship letter" struck in red with London arrival (14.1) on the reverse; the long letter includes, "Things wear a gloomy aspect in Coomassie, the King As though hurried on by the demon of blood, has for weeks passed done little else than decapitate his subjects ... Poor old Corintchie, has been most cruelly murdered. The monarch ordered the water of a small brook to be turned out of this channel, in it a deep hole was then made, in this hole poor C was placed alive, and the water turned over him." An interesting early letter. Photo
