Kashgar is an oasis city and geographically is one of the westernmost cities of China, located near the border with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Kashgar has been a major commercial centre for a very long time. It is the meeting point where the north and south branches of the Silk Road coming from China. Close to this city stands the Stone Tower where Chinese Caravans exchanged their goods against those brought by Western traders coming from Persia, Syria and the Roman world.
