On 2 August a fortnightly airmail service was commenced from Penang by sea to Calcutta, then by train to Karachi for air connection to London. On 30 November it became a weekly despatch.
1932 (12 July) envelope (opened-out) from Christmas Island to England, marked "Calcutta - England, ex Christmas Island", franked at 58c. (8c. surface and 2x25c. air fee), clearly tied by "christmas island" double-ring d.s., showing "by air mail" etiquette with Singapore datestamp (17.7) on reverse; the envelope with a few minor tone spots. Very rare, the earliest recorded airmail cover from Christmas Island. Photo
