1882 (May and Oct.) envelopes written by General Gordon at Cape Town to members of the Mackinnon family in Scotland, the first 6d. violet and the second 3d. pale claret vertical pair both cancelled by squared-circle datestamps and the second additionally by two pen-strokes; small imperfections though an unusual pair written whilst Gordon was in South Africa and where he accepted the appointment of Temporary Commandant General of the Cape Forces. Also 1880 letter from Gordon to Giegler including "I had an offer by telegraph the other day of command of the Cape Colonial Forces"
