George Hay, 8th Earl of Kinnoull
1816 (c.) (17 July) entire letter to Duncan Forbes, Advocate at "Edenburg". Lord Hay had just been released from the Tower of London for suspected Jacobite sympathies and was writing to the new avocate who was concerned that he may be called on to take part in the trial of the Jacobites at Carlisle. Lord Hay was aware of this "disagreeable part of that office" and encouraged Forbes to "struggle through". The outside shows some light ageing and bears London Bishop mark "19/IY" and indistinct General Post Receiving House handstamp of two initials in circle. An interesting item from the Jacobite problems. Photo
