The Oryx Collection of South West Africa: Tribal Tax Part I
Eastern Caprivi: Mafue tribe
Pair of paper registration certificates, the first showing Tribal Levies from 1956-66, paid with South Africa revenue 1954/60 'Arms' revenue 10/- green and blue overprinted "mafue" in red, (2), the next two years with New currency 'Arms' revenue R4 blue and brown (2) without overprint, 1962-65 paid with "Scrolls" R4 violet and gold (2) overprinted "mafwe-stam/ caprivi" either side of the scroll, 1966 levy paid with R2 greenish-blue and gold overprinted with the same type. The second certificate bearing payment for 1962 only, with 1954/60 "Arms" £1 pink and green overprinted "mafue". Creases in first document run through stamps, though a spectacular pair franked with excessively rare stamps; this lot containing two of the four registration cards surviving for this tribe. Photo
