The Oryx Collection of South West Africa: Tribal Tax Part I
Ongandjera Tribe
Group of registration certificates (3) and control cards (3), comprising registration card paying 1937-48 spectacularly franked with 1913 South Africa revenue overprinted "ongandjera/ s.w.a." badly torn, 1931 postage ½d. black and emerald (2) both surcharged "5/- / Omgandjera" with misspelled tribe name, with other years paid with 1931 postage 3d. grey-blue and blue (2), 5/- sage-green and red brown (torn), and 1937 postage 1½d. purple-brown (3) variously overprinted. Offered with later c.1969 card bearing 1953 coronation 2d. deep bluish green surcharged "Ongandjera/ 10/-" (2), and 1952 "Riebeck" postage issue surcharged "Ongandjera/ 7/6"", the coronation pair partially obscured by the numerous (6+) labels affixed to the card, Finally a damaged card with label affixed 23/7/87 proving tribal levies were still being collected within 3 years of independence. A superb lot containing two of the four recorded cards from this tribe, the first card particularly spectacular having been chosen for the cover of Beck's 2016 handbook. Photo
