Early India, Audumbara / Vemaka, 'Mahadeva' (c.2nd -1st Century BC), AR Unit, 2.19g. elephant standing right holding an ankus, trident standing before, Brahmi legend around, bhĀgavata mahĀdevasa rĀjaraja, rev. humped bull standing left with wavy line below, chackram or flower by feet left, swastika above, Kharoshthi legend around, bhagavata mahadevasa rajarajna (cf. BMC. pl. XIV, 13; Pieper -, 1148 var, -; MAC -, 4434-38), attractive very fine with clear legends, extremely rare
There is some controversy over whether these coins were struck by the Audumbaras or the Vemakas. Pieper attributes them to the latter due to similarities with issues of the Vemaka ruler Rudravarman, however earlier authorities term them 'Audumbara.'
