The Anglo-Liberian Boundary Commission met in Sierra Leone in 1879 in an attempt to agree a demarcation of the border between the then British Colony of Sierra Leone and Liberia. The Liberian Government asked for a team of United States advisors to assist their delegation in the negotiations. B.J. Cromwell, Commander of the U.S.S. "Ticonderoga" (at that time on a goodwill world cruise) and Commodore Robert W. Schufeldt were appointed to lead the United States delegation.
1879 31 Mar) envelope, with enclosures headed "U.S.S. Ticonderoga, Cape Mount Liberia", to Philadelphia, marked "Ship Letter", showing, blue crayon "50", "t" handstamp, "new york, due/10/cents" d.s. (7.5) and, on reverse, "3a/liverpool/br. packet" c.d.s. (25.4) and arrival datestamp; the envelope with most of flap missing, fine and rare. (Letter number 16). Photo
