The Cromwell Correspondence
The Anglo-Liberian Boundary Commission met in Sierra Leone in 1879 in an attempt to agree a demarcation of the border between the then British Colony of Sierra Leone and Liberia. The Liberian Government asked for a team of United States advisors to assist their delegation in the negotiations. B.J. Cromwell, Commander of the U.S.S. "Ticonderoga" (at that time on a goodwill world cruise) and Commodore Robert W. Schufeldt were appointed to lead the United States delegation.
1879 (29 Mar.) envelope, with enclosure headed "U.S.S. Ticonderoga, Cape Mount Liberia", to Philadelphia, marked "Ship Letter", face panel with blue crayon cross, the envelope sent direct to New York showing "new york, ship letter/due 6 cts" d.s. (5.5.) with, on reverse, clear arrival c.d.s.; the envelope slightly truncated at right. (Letter number 16). Photo
