The Cromwell Correspondence
The Anglo-Liberian Boundary Commission met in Sierra Leone in 1879 in an attempt to agree a demarcation of the border between the then British Colony of Sierra Leone and Liberia. The Liberian Government asked for a team of United States advisors to assist their delegation in the negotiations. B.J. Cromwell, Commander of the U.S.S. "Ticonderoga" (at that time on a goodwill world cruise) and Commodore Robert W. Schufeldt were appointed to lead the United States delegation.
1879 (22 Feb.) envelope, with enclosure headed "U.S.S. Ticonderoga, Monrovia", to Philadelphia, showing "monrovia/liberia" circular h.s. with "paid" h.s. inserted, manuscript "7d" and "paid/liverpool/br. packet/3b" c.d.s.
