1896 (Jan.) envelope (damage on reverse through opening) "From No 1317 Cr. Sergt. W E Brennan West Riding Regt. S.S. Arab Teneriffe" to York and written whilst in transit between the U.K. and South Africa, bearing 1881 1d. lilac perfin perforated "u n/co" (union Steam ship Company) and cancelled with superb "paid/liverpool/br. packet" c.d.s. for 23 January, showing offset of "930" numeral and, on reverse, York arrival c.d.s. A most unusual item of concessionary mail. Photo
Note: The 2nd. West Riding Regiment was stationed in South Africa at this time. Colour Sergeant Brennan was travelling aboard the S.S. Arab which was being used as a troop ship which called at Tenerife, Canary Islands en route
