John Walmsley, C.E.R.A. 2.Cl. H.M.S. Indefatigable), nearly extremely fine, together with named box lids of issue and a copied photograph of the recipient with his family (4)

270409 Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class John Walmsley, born Manchester, December 1874; a Fitter and Turner by trade; enlisted, 11.3.1901 as Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class; served in H.M.S. Prometheus in the Far East from 1.10.1904; served as an Engineering Lecturer at Brittania Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, a family story states that he reprimanded the two young Princes who were both attending at the time; served in H.M.S. Indefatigable from 17.6.1913; served in the Royal Navy during the Great War; killed in action at the Battle of Jutland, aged 43, 31.5.1916, when Indefatigable suffered a number of direct hits to the magazine area and sank quickly with the loss of all but three of its 1,017 crew, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
