Auction: 151 - The Philatelic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 826
1867 Acambaro bogus provisional cover, "Franca/En Acambaro" handstamp similar to the cancel used for this period with additional "2" and "Rs" separate handstamps inserted as a value designation on a small slip of white paper, this is similar to other towns using there canceling device to make provisional stamps during the struggle against the French Emperor Maximilian, this has been tied to a genuine entire folded letter of the period that evidently was carried out of the mails, datelined "Acambaro, Marzo 5 de 1867" to Morelia with all the appropriate docketing, the authenticity of the cover is what gives credence to the bogus provisional which is tied by a mute circular cancel with an arrow through it without town designation or date, this bogus issue has been known since the late 1800s and is accompanied by a page from the April 1935 Godden's Gazette describing and photographing a similar cover to the same correspondent in Morelia which is being reported as a possible new find, a very fine and scarce reference for the Mexican specialist.
