Stephen (1135-54), the anarchy, Angevins, Empress Matilda (1139-c.45), Penny, 1.09g, ?Bristol, uncertain moneyer, crowned bust left, collar with six large pellets, sceptre before, [..]tild[..]mp, rev. +[...]n.br..toi, cross moline, lis in angles (cf. Mack BNJ 35 1966, coins nos.230-233, and bust style, 239 - mint uncertain; N.936; S.1326), bold bust, usual weakness in legends, good fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 2,000-3,000 provenance Found near Gloucester, c.1992 Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2012.0136 The bold collar, bust style and clear letter t above the first arch of the crown matches Mack 239, a coin of Matilda (uncertain mint). The possible attribution of this new coin to Bristol is made based on a tentative reading of the rather obscured reverse legend. The find location for this new coin is consistent with where single finds of Matilda´s coins would be expected to be found with the strongholds of her supporters in the 1130s based around Gloucester and Bristol.
