1798 5 Dollars, Large 8-13 Stars. NCS XF Details, Obverse Graffiti. Breen-6429, B. 3-E, Miller-28, R.6. A rare and easily identifiable die marriage as a large die crack moves from star 7 to and through Liberty´s hair curls to emerge again at the 8 in the date. As is usual for the variety, an engraver´s scratch is seen below BE in LIBERTY. Striking softness is confined to the centers, but does not overly detract from the appeal. As mentioned on the NCS holder, graffiti is present on the obverse in two locations; in the form of three vertical marks above Liberty´s cap and what may be an attempt at an initial to the right of Liberty´s mouth. The reverse remains essentially unscathed. Enhancing the eye appeal is copper-orange patina that clings to portions of the devices. A desirable type that is sure to catch the expert´s eye.
