Auction: 11023 - Ancient, English & Foreign Coins and Commemorative Medals
Lot: 30
Cnut (1016-35), Penny, 0.82g, pointed helmet type, Canterbury, Wulfmaer, draped, helmeted bust left, sceptre before, rev. +pvlmaer on centra, voided short cross extending from two circles with a pellet, broken annulet in each angle (N.787; S.1158), an unlisted moneyer for Cnut at Canterbury, some time cleaned now showing signs of re-toning, good very fine, very rare Estimate £ 400-500 The mint signature centra or centpa is noted for some other coins of Canterbury for this issue however no moneyer by the name of Wulfmaer is recorded in either the SCBI, BMC or EMC for this mint and Cnut. Moneyers by the name of Wulfmaer are known for several other mints under Cnut. It is conceivable that this moneyer could have produced a small output at Canterbury whilst moving between mints. Notably a Wulfmaer is known for Romney and London so it is not impossible that the Canterbury Wulfmaer might be this person. Canterbury is a scarce mint for this issue recorded for 105 coins.
