† Great Britain Postal History Newspapers The Times, January 1, 1840, three letters to the editor on page 6, under the heading "Penny Postage", two of these letters complain about the proposed introduction or the new prepaid envelopes and labels as being cumbersome and unnecessary as well as being laid open to forgery. The third letter states that there were over 2600 plans sent in to compete for the Penny Post and four were awarded prizes, even though their plans were not adopted. The writer thought it would be fair if their proposals were made public; signed "A Competitor".
