† Great Britain Postal History Newspapers The Times, December 24, 1839, page 2 with two letters to the editor under the banner "Penny Post", one complaining about the Penny Postman being careless by damaging letters on delivery and leaving them under the door knocker, and that four or five of his neighbours having their knockers similarly employed. The second letter complained about the postage taking no regard for fractions of ounces and that anything over one ounce could attract four times the rate of postage, and if unpaid it would be double, or up to eight times the rate.
