Charles I, Sir Thomas Fairfax, oval cast and chased gold military reward, 1645, by T Simon, armoured bust left of Sir Thomas Fairfax with plain collar and mantle fastened on left shoulder, rev. mervisti, legend around, post.hac.meliora.1645., suspension loop (MI, I, 318,151 and plate XXVII, 14; Eimer 146b), very fine, rare Estimate £ 2,500-3,000 This Military reward was bestowed by Parliament and the City of London on those who served with Fairfax at the battles of Marston Moor in 1644 and Naseby in 1645. Examples in gold are thought to have been awarded to senior officers.
