Charles I, Robert Devereaux, Earl of Essex, cast and chased silver gilt military reward badge, 1642, half length figure of the Earl of Essex almost full face, in armour and holding sword to left, sx over head, legend around in two bands, outer band, should hear both houses of parliament for the true religion and subiects fredom stand, inner legend, pro.religione.lege.rege. et parliamento, the two houses of parliament with the king and speaker, wreath border both sides, suspension loops (MI, 295, 113, plate XXVI, 10; Eimer 140a), light scratches in fields, very fine Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 provenance Bt. Baldwin, May 1996 Robert Devereaux, the eldest son of Elizabeth I´s favourite (executed 1602), was born in 1591. Having successfully commanded forces in the Netherlands he was appointed as Commander in Chief of the Parliamentary forces when the Civil War broke out. He was relieved of his command in 1645 and died in 1646. These badges are thought to have been issued to persons of various ranks who served under his command.
