Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, The Potomac 17 Aug 1814 (Thos. Sonnerat, Clerk.), minor edge bruising, otherwise nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 5,000-6,000 Thomas Sonnerat served as Clerk in H.M.S. Devastation (bomb-vessel) as part of Captain J.A. Gordon´s eight ship squadron for the capture of Fort Washington and the town of Alexandria, 17-29.8.1814. Gordon´s squadron managed to capture 21 sail of prizes having travelled nearly 50 miles up the Potomac River. No ships of a similar draught, with their guns and stores on board, had attempted to navigate the river before. Provenance: Whalley Collection 1877 Colonel Murray Collection Spink March 1995
