A Scarce ´April 1814 American Boat Action´ N.G.S. to J. Masterman, For the Destruction of 27 Enemy Vessels, 14 Miles Up the Connecticut River Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, 8 April Boat Service 1814 (Joseph Masterman.), minor edge nicks, otherwise good very fine Estimate £ 6,000-7,000 Joseph Masterman served as Quarter Gunner in H.M.S. Hogue, and was present on the evening of 7.4.1814, when Commander R. Coote despatched six boats with 136 officers and men under his orders from H.M. Ships Hogue, Endymion, Maidstone and Boxer to capture or destroy a number of American vessels near Pettipaque Point, fourteen miles up the Connecticut River. They arrived on the 8th, and after a skirmish with the militia stationed there, destroyed the 27 vessels that were found afloat or on stocks within three miles of the area. Three of the vessels were large privateers and the aggregate burden of the 27 was upwards of 5,000 tons. Approximately 24 clasps issued for this action.
