Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Venerable 16 Jany 1814 (William Figgins.), extremely fine Estimate £ 4,500-5,000 William Figgins served as Landsman in H.M.S. Venerable (Captain J.A. Worth) when in concert with H.M.S Cyane captured the French 40-gun frigates Alcmène and Iphigénie, off the Canary Islands, the former vessel being boarded by Captain Worth, the latter being captured after a four day pursuit, 16-20.1.1814. The French ships were added to the Royal Navy as the Gloire and Dunira. Approximately 42 ´Venerable 16 Jany. 1814´ clasps issued for this action. Provenance: Whittaker Collection 1890
