Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Spartan 3 May 1810 (T. Burr, Clerk.), minor edge nicks, good very fine Estimate £ 5,000-6,000 Thomas Burr served as Clerk in H.M.S. Spartan when she single handedly bested the Franco-Neopolitan frigate Ceres, the corvette Fama, the brig Sparviere, the cutter Achille and seven gun boats in a two hour hard fought action, 3.5.1810. Marshal Murat witnessed the action from the shore in disbelief, as the Spartan outgunned 95 to 38 guns routed his squadron and towed away his personal yacht, the Sparviere as a prize. The Spartan lost 10 killed and 22 wounded in the action, whilst the French suffered 30 killed and 90 wounded. Approximately 30 clasps issued for this action.
