Gibraltar 1886 (24 Feb.) envelope (complete with letter) from H.R.H. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and second son of Queen Victoria, to Captain Sydney Webb at Trinity House, written on board H.M.S. Tamar, initialled "A2" at lower left corner and bearing 1/2d. dull green and 1d. rose-red pair twice cancelled with "A26" duplex, small part London c.d.s. on reverse; some faults at right clear of the adhesives though a unique first issue usage from a member of the Royal Family. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: The letter, written on stationery of H.M.S. "Tamar" includes reference to discussions that had taken place between the Prince and Captain Bruce about the possibility of organising a code of signals between the fleet and lighthouses, and his concerns regarding lighthouses being destroyed by the enemy should they undertake such military duties such as signalling to allied ships
