In Italy it was Fausto Scerno a merchant from Genova, who was the pioneer for introducing this so important refrigeration industry. In 1902, he founded the Magazzini Frigoriferi Genovesi SA to build the first cold store with 3’600m3 storage room in the harbor of Genova. Scerno also planned for a nationwide expansion of the refrigeration industry through the implementation of a network of refrigeration equipment in Italian ports. Thanks to his idea ships started to be equipped with refrigerated holds and began construction of steamships refrigerator. But Scerno not only rented out cold stores, he also hired two butcher for setting up sales of frozen meat in the city and in 1905, he bought the first car refrigerator. However success was very slow.
