In 1886, a concession was granted to the Monte Generoso SA for the construction of a narrow gauge and cog railway to the summit. It opened in 1890. The 9 km line runs from Capolago station, where trains connect with boat services of the “Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano” and ends at Generoso Vetta terminus (1,605 m). It is the highest railway in Ticino. From the beginning the Company had financial problems and had to be restructured several times. In the 1939, the owners approached Gottlieb Duttweiler, the founder of the Migros group, for assistance. In 1941 the railway became a cooperative within the Migros group.
