The Karakoram Highway, also known as Friendship Highway in China connects Kashgar in China to Abbottabad in Pakistan 1300km away. Work started in 1959 and was opened to the public in 1979. Sections of the Pakistani section required Chinese workers to complete and therefore for the reasons stated in the above lot tokens were issued by the People's Bank of China in Xinjiang Province for workers to use during their work in Pakistan. When the highway was completed in 1979, virtually all notes were redeemed and very few survived. For this reason, and also the fact that the area and duration of circulation were extremely limited meant these tokens are now extremely rare such that the 1 yuan is one of two known extant and the 5 yuan a unique piece. Of high importance and rarity (3)
