1888 (Nov.) envelope registered to Germany bearing, on the reverse, 3ca. bright mauve (3) and 5ca. bright olive-yellow (3) in irregular blocks of three cancelled by good strikes of the Tientsin seal type VI in black with a good strike of the large "R" in oval type I registration handstamp. There is also Customs Shanghai c.d.s. (7.11), "ligne n/paq. fr. no.4" datestamp (10.11) in blue and Magdeburg arrival (14.12), the last two tying the stamps. The address side with France 75c. (faults) tied by "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s. (9.11) with another strike of the Tientsin "R" in oval and French registration handstamp in red. One of the 3ca. is cliché 14 and one of the 5ca. was torn before being affixed to the envelope, which has a central vertical fold.


A fine and important cover paying 24ca. for international registered mail and represents quite early use of the Tientsin registered handstamp. The Tientsin post office forgot to apply their despatch datestamp. Photo
