Auction: CSS45 - Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong
Lot: 645

The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $500, printer's model of the obverse, Tientsin, 1st September 1930, brown and black, bust of a male Roman soldier at lower left, bank coat of arms at centre, '500' in light blue lower centre, handwritten 'approved see l/d (letter dated) 12. July 1930', the date of the printer's model differs to the final version which is '1st November 1930',
(Pick S220pm1), PMG 62 Uncirculated (Repaired) and unique. The cataloguer thinks the 'Repaired' comment is rather unfair as it can only refer to the bust of the Roman soldier. The most likely explanation is that the original bust was not appropriate and rather than re-drawing the whole picture it was cut out and replaced. An iconic in the Chartered Bank series and matches with the uniface reverse model that was sold by Spink China in March 2019.
