The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, a geuine $5 fradulently raised to $50, dated 1.5.1922, serial number M/A 391274, the ‘$5’ and the Chinese character ‘Wu’ raised to ‘$50’ and ‘Wu Shi’ (Fifty), the English word ‘FIVE’ unchnaged, blue on pale orange, bank coat of arms at centre, denomination at each corner, rice pounding scene at left and sampans at right, handsigned at lower left and black printed manuscript signature at lower right, hand stamped ‘CANCELLED’ in English and Chinese on obverse and reverse, also brush ink writing in Chinese on reverse,
(Pick 41 for type), original crisp good very fine with five vertical folds, brush writing on the reverse. A delightful note with fresh colours and strong thick paper. The raising of notes and passing them at higher value is seen in various countries, bascially a form of resourceful private enterprise. In this case this note was originally saved by the Bank probably relating to a trial for counterfeiting, and as a result a beautiful example has survived that otherwise would have circulated further and been redeemed!
