The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $50, 1st September 1929, uniface obverse and reverse hand painted composite essay for the 'Roman' series, signed by Fergusson, brown, black and blue, male Roman soldier at left, supported arms at upper centre, denomination at each corner, the reverse in similar colours, rice planting scene at pagoda at right, this was the approved design used for the issued notes, as can be seen by the pencil annotation 'approved design see customer's letter d/ 8 April 1930' on the obverse and 'approved design - subject to alteration see customer's letter d/ 8April 1930' on the reverse, written on the mounting frame. The only difference is the date on the obverse is 1.9.1929, which was NOT the actual first date of issue. There is a pencil annotation on the obverse design instructing the date to be changed to '1 July 1930', the final date used and also the change of siganture to 'J. Stuart'. The issued notes do not bear the signature of Fergusson as seen on this printer's model,
(Pick 56pm), the obverse PMG 62 and the reverse 65EPQ. A unique pair and important as these are the final designs for this famous and popular series. The prospective buyer should note the fine details painted in fresh colours. An superb work of art and the second of our magnificent run of printer's models (1 pair)
