The next 36 lots coins from the Silk Road collected by Nicholas Rhodes. He travelled overland to India on various occasions in his younger days, so although these coins are outside his main area of interest, it is not surprising the he found a place for them in his collection.

They were mostly struck in the 19th century and mark time of transition from independent states and small khanates loosely tied to the Ottoman Empire to the early domination of the Chinese Empire in these areas, now eastern Uzbekistan and western China.

In cataloguing these coins we are greatly indebted to Vladimir Nastich and Wolfgang Schuster, whose recent publication 'Catalog of Pre-Modern Central Asian Coins 1680-1923,' (Bremer Numismatische Gesellschaft, Band 10, Bremen, 2017) covers the previously neglected coins of this region in great detail, and is referred to throughout.
